Email is still the number one way attackers get into an organization. In 2025, the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) logged more than $20.8 billion in reported losses, a 26% jump over the prior year, and business email compromise (BEC) alone accounted for roughly $3 billion of that total. Jean Patrice Delia was an engineer at GE when he decided to steal company data and use trade secrets, pricing information, marketing data, and other documents and funnel them to his business partner to compete against GE. After an FBI investigation, Delia was arrested and sentenced to two years in prison and ordered to pay $1.4 million in restitution.
